Living a healthy life is not only a matter of eating well and exercising. It’s also the clarity of mind, body and your surroundings. But in our busy, hectic lives, we often forget that we have to take care of ourselves, and we let things that don’t bring us any benefit pile up around us. So, if you feel like you are ready for a fresh start and a deep cleaning of your life, here’s how you can do it:

                Tidy the space around you

You cannot have a clear head if you are surrounded by chaos. The first step in any cleaning is to get rid of the things you don’t need. Get large boxes, bags and a ruthless friend who will help you get rid of stuff, and start throwing things away. Make several piles for donations, recycling and garbage. Limit yourself to one “maybe” box to make sure you aren’t holding on to anything you don’t really need. To avoid your entire home becoming an even bigger mess, do this room by room and take your time. Don’t stretch it out for too long, but there’s no need to try and get everything done in one weekend. Take a look at the decorations you have around the house and ask yourself if you really need them. Do you still like them, or are you just used to them by now? Are they really enhancing the look of the place or just creating a mess? If the answer is later, you know what to do.

                Deep clean everything

Sure, we all dust and vacuum once per week, but when is the last time you did a true deep cleaning? Wash the carpets and the mattresses, clean the hardwood and take down all the curtains. Summer is the perfect time to do this, as you can take things outside or open up the windows and have everything dry before sundown. Keep in mind that for some of these things, you are going to want to hire professionals to make sure you don’t ruin your furniture, but some you can also do by yourself if you look online for the right techniques. Remember that after a place has been deep cleaned, you want to keep it that way, so make sure you establish a cleaning routine and get the best air purifier you can find to keep the place smelling clean and prevent condensation.

                Get rid of negative thoughts

When we are in a bad mental space, we tend to overthink things, be unhappy and perform much worse. And getting rid of negative thoughts isn’t a simple process. The first step is dealing with anything you have been pushing into the back of your mind, whether it’s an uncomfortable call, a visit to the doctor or some activity. Get it over and done with so that you can move on with your life. Whenever you feel thoughts buzzing in your head get overpowering, take a few moments to meditate. Find a place where you won’t be disturbed and just breathe deeply for a few minutes, aware of your body and letting all thoughts come and go as they please. The more often you do this, the easier it will be to get yourself in the right headspace.

                Cut off toxic people

Did you have a person pop into mind as soon as you read this? Toxic people can be detrimental to our own lives, and it’s crucial that we limit our contact with them. These are people who only take energy from us and don’t give us anything in return and, more importantly, we don’t feel good around them. Remember that these people can be someone as close to you as your family or best childhood friend. You don’t owe anyone your time and attention, so make sure you surround yourself with positive people who make you feel good.

Getting your life back in order after you’ve “fell off the tracks” can be a long process. However, it’s important that you start because if you keep putting it off, you will only be falling deeper into your mess. Try to live intuitively, listening to your body and your wishes, and don’t be afraid to put yourself first. Remember, you can’t help anyone else if you are the one in need of help.
