“Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save and preserve it.” –Plato

William Londen was quoted to say that to ensure good health; one must eat lightly, breathe deeply, live moderately, cultivate cheerfulness and maintain an interest in life. All these and more (save for eating lightly) are encapsulated in the concept of activities done outdoors. For this reason, it not only recommended to get your dose of nature every once in a while but rather required if you wish to maintain an optimal level of health. In this day and age wherein technological advancements and innovations seem to be dominating the world, spending time outdoors is no longer seen as an avenue for respite and relaxation. Rather, now it has been heavily regarded as a leisurely alternative to spending your time indoors with your eyes glued to devise monitors and displays. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, we should not be enslaved by these gadgets which were initially our creations. These contemporary contraptions and modern breakthroughs may have afforded people convenience and accessibility, but it has consequently alienated people from each other.

For this reason, the concept of gadget and social media detox was introduced to the world. The movement endeavors to encourage people to spend more time with each other or focus on other things while keeping their hands, eyes, and ears away from any sort of gadget. An excellent avenue to accomplish just that is to rediscover the majesty of nature again. Explore the great outdoors and have an uninterrupted time basking yourself in its splendor without being interrupted by a phone call or being distracted by a social media notification. Whether this might take the form of a camping trip or a brief escapade to Vermosa would be entirely up to you.

However, here are some of the benefits you can expect from indulging yourself with time spent outdoors:

  • Physical Activities

Of course, first and foremost, spending time outdoors is an avenue for performing physical activities. Regardless of what you choose to do, any and every outdoor activity would involve some form of physical activity in one way or another. What you do does not have to be sports oriented either. After all, the simple act of walking through nature and basking in its beauty would already exercise your legs. Moreover, it allows you to get your much-needed dose of Vitamin D from the sun as well.

  • Mental Exercise

Without a doubt, spending time outdoors refreshes the mind. Apart from allowing yourself to breathe in the fresh air and take in the beauty of nature, it also allows you to engage in activities such as hiking, backpacking or camping. While these activities would largely involve the movement of your limbs, you are not only doing physical exercise. Your mind can very much benefit from these physical excursions. After all, you would likely need a map to reach a particular destination which greatly improves mental health. Furthermore, as your mind is free to explore, learning is honed and enhanced as well.

  • Improved Behavior

While outdoor activities can be enjoyed all by your lonesome; it is known to be more enjoyable when enjoyed in the company of other people. As you interact with other people, your behavior can be developed. In this regard, you would then know how to work seamlessly together as a team or perhaps, how to conduct yourself in front of a large crowd. In some aspects, enjoying the great outdoors compels you to socialize with others and would even motivate you to work with them.

  • Increased Work Productivity

People who spend more time outdoors tend to be more productive than those who rarely see the sunlight. Furthermore, they are more relaxed and can react to stressful situations better than their counterparts who spend most of their time indoors.

  • Increased Environmental Awareness

Exploring the great outdoors allows you to appreciate the wonder of nature. Apart from taking in its beauty and magnificence, it also allows taking notice of the environmental issues that are currently plaguing the world. The more time you spend outdoors, the more you can come to appreciate the enormity of the pressing environmental concerns and dilemma. From there, a sense of awareness develops and would motivate them to protect the environment and might even propel them to do volunteer work to mitigate these ecological issues and perhaps, eliminate them.
