Some things can undermine a woman’s confidence as she ages. Some are physical, and some are mental. Some are also societal – that is, feeling less valued as you age. Facing these fears, however, can help older women boost their confidence and empower themselves.

Studies have shown that women make up the majority of heads of households in the US. In some cases, they are a single parent household. In other cases, they are earning more than their partner. However, since women make 35% less than men on average, this can lead to a good deal of financial fear and insecurity, both short term and long term.

Regarding societal issues, older women tend to feel “invisible” for a number reasons, which usually have to do with the way they are represented in the media and their overall status in society.

Facing these fears, however, can help older women boost their confidence and empower themselves.

Financial Fears

We mentioned that women earn far less than men, but they certainly don’t get 35% off on their rent/mortgage, food, utilities and so on.

Financial insecurity can cause a great deal of anxiety. Fortunately, there are many ways to learn more about how to manage money. Create a budget and stick to it. Start a new business online. Become a direct seller of products such as Avon and Pampered Chef. There are many ways to earn more if you are prepared to put in the time and effort. Don’t forget to build a retirement fund so you can feel more secure as you age.

Becoming “Invisible”

There are some reasons why a woman becomes invisible in society. The first is the process of aging. Magazines tend to show young women on their front covers, with every flaw airbrushed out. This tends to create a standard of what is an impossible ideal versus the reality of an actual woman.

Women in these magazines also tend to be at the height of fashion and sexiness. However, most women can’t afford a lot of designer fashions. Some can get into “mom” mode as well, putting family ahead of style and romance.

Another reason women become invisible has to do with their weight. When women get chubbier, they may feel that they are less attractive in the eyes of others. If they are in a meaningful romantic relationship, this can be incredibly depressing and cause the woman to withdraw from intimacy.

If an older woman is single, she might start to feel as if she is never going to meet anyone with whom she can share her life. Lots of people try online dating, speed dating, and so forth. However, in many cases, they end up disappointed in the people they meet. They could be because their expectations are too high. Or, it could be that a lot of people are just out for a good time and not interested in a long-term romantic relationship.

This is fine as long as people are clear about it. Honesty is always the best policy. However, a lot of people online are not honest at all and pretend to be something that they’re not. This can lead to a lot of hurts and a reluctance to try again after having been fooled in one way or another.

Unfortunately, game players might leave the woman feeling as if it is HER fault that things didn’t work out when the other person might have been deceiving them all along. Self-blame can lead to an overall lack of confidence which can spill over from your personal life to your professional life.

Confidence Is Sexy

The truth is that it doesn’t matter what you look like; it is how you carry yourself. A woman with an air of confidence exudes strength and sexiness.

Invest time in yourself to address your fears, and see what a difference it can make to your level of confidence.
