We all know how bad eating habits can affect our dental health. But are there any food choices that can help protect our dental health? Is there anything that not only protects our teeth but also makes them look better? Of course, there is!
Results may vary from person to person. What works for some people, does not work for others.
Food that cleans and protects your teeth
1. Green tea
This type of tea contains polyphenols, antioxidants and many other herbal components which minimize plaque retention and decrease chances for development of decay and gum disease. Besides that, it protects you from bad breath. It should be avoided by pregnant and breastfeeding women.
2. Milk and yogurt
Unsweetened yogurt and milk are good choices for your teeth. They have little acidity, which means that they don’t cause consecutive tooth wear and chemical erosion. Milk is also a good source of calcium which is the main component of teeth and bones.
3. Cheese
Low carb levels and high concentration of calcium and phosphates make cheese beneficial food choice for your teeth as well. These elements ensure balanced acidity in your mouth, enamel remineralization, provoke more salivation and fight cariogenic bacteria.
4. Fruits
Different fruits like apples, strawberries, grapefruit and especially kiwi contain lots of vitamin C, which is crucial for gingival health. Lack of vitamin C leads to the disintegration of the collagen net in the gums, which is why they get swollen and more prone to bacterial infection.
5. Veggies
Pumpkin, carrots, sweet potato, broccoli are full of vitamin A. This vitamin is essential for dental enamel formation. Besides that, crunchy veggies clean and massage your gums!
6. Garlic
This vegetable should be pointed out because of its strong antibacterial effects. Plenty of tests has proven that garlic kills many bacteria. Research studies reveal that it’s more potent when you eat it fresh and raw. And healthy teeth are guaranteed.
7. Celery
Celery components protect our teeth and more than that, chewing celery stimulates lots of saliva, which neutralizes different bacteria that cause decay. It gives you gums a gentle massage and cleanses the interdental spaces.
8. Sesame seed
Healthy teeth could be a result of combining bread and sesame. Due to its roughness, it cleans the dental plaque, and it also helps you build healthy enamel. Sesame seeds are rich in calcium which protect your teeth, bones, and gums.
9. Nonvegetarian diet
Beef, poultry, turkey meat and eggs contain phosphorus. This element is crucial because calcium, just by itself isn’t enough. But combined with phosphorus and vitamin D it builds healthy bones. These elements make your teeth stronger and healthier.
10. Water
Water helps your salvation so that it can make miracles by sending minerals back to your weak teeth. When you drink water, your gums are healthier and helps you wash out small food particles that are decomposing in your mouth and causing bad breath, decay, and gum infection.
